Rulesets
Rulesets, not realms
You do not pick a realm. You pick Normal, PvP, Roleplay, or Roleplay-PvP, and that choice stays.
Four choices at the character
Normal is the default cooperative ruleset. PvP enables the open-world player combat rules and, in the Outpost guide, locks you to one faction's queues in a way that surprised Horde players at launch. Roleplay asks for in-character names and conduct. Roleplay-PvP stacks those. Hardcore is a fifth ruleset that is not selectable yet.
The Outpost guide says you cannot transfer a character between rulesets. I have no Blizzard form that contradicts that. Layering still happens inside a ruleset when a zone is crowded. If the client says the ruleset is temporarily unavailable, that is an outage sentence, not a hidden fifth mode.
| Ruleset | Open at launch | Notable limit | Sources |

| PvP | Yes | Faction limit reported | 2 sources |
| Roleplay | Yes | Name and conduct expectations | 2 sources |

| Hardcore | No | Later, no date | 2 sources |
Questions
Can I move my character to PvP later?
The guide says no. I have not found a paid transfer that says otherwise.
Where did my realm go?
Forever does not use a realm list. Classic still does.
